Back to Viridian Waters

Another picture perfect day with winds forecast to be less than 4 mph and temps in the low 70’s.  It was a perfect day to cross the big waters of Simcoe Lake on our way to Port Orillia Marina.  Locks 37-41 are like stairsteps going down to the level of Simcoe Lake.  Each lock is less than a mile apart, and our 4-boat group was first up at lock 37. We hit the next locks down to the lake with no delays.

Crossing Simcoe Lake, we were once again cruising in viridian-colored water like we saw in the Keys.  The water in these lakes is so clear, and when the sun is shining in to them they look like a jewel.

Once across Simcoe, we stopped at a marina and topped off the diesel and earned a free pump-out along with a 5% discount for being a Looper.  Not too bad.  Our final destination for the day was Port Orillia, a large marina on the order of Port Trent at the beginning of the TSW.  We reunited with several Loopers we have traveled with as the marina filled for the weekend.  Viridian will depart here on Sunday, 22 July, and make our way through the last few locks before entering the Georgian Bay.

One of the locks will be the "Big Chute Marine Railway", where we drive into a cradle attached to a railway system that lifts boats up, over and down into the lake below.

Making Our Way West to the Trent Severn Water Way, Canada

It was a good day and a good time participating in the Canada Day celebration in Kingston Ontario.  July 1 here is like July 4 in the States: good food, good times and a spectacular fireworks display to cap off the celebration.  We participated in a road race around the courthouse, and the heat and humidity made us feel just like we were at home in Alabama.


Today's 73-mile cruise from Kingston to Trenton took us west along the Trent River past Nicholsons Point and Adolphustown to Deseronto and Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory to Belleville and into Trenton.  Trenton marks the beginning of the Trent Severn Waterway from Lake Ontario, overland to the Georgian Bay north of Lake Huron.  The morning started off calm and smooth.  The crystal clear water was cold and kept us cool with a nice breeze blowing from the west.  This breeze later picked up to a 15-18 mph wind with squall warning in our area.  We managed to avoid the heavy weather, but the wind was with us all the way in to Trenton but it was directly on our bow.  We docked at Trent Port Marina, and of the 102 marinas we have visited so far; this one has to be the best one yet.
